Overview

Audience: Regional chapter of a national labor union of campus workers who are new to the union's recruitment strategies

Responsibilities: Consultation, content development, scripting, instructional design, and eLearning development

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline360, Canva, Vyond, WellSaid Labs, Camtasia

Product: Situated learning module w/ interactive scenario

Process: Successive Approximation Model (SAM)

* The full module includes the scenario. You can speed up or skip through the eLearning as needed *

Problem and Solution

The client identified that the local chapter attendance was not representative of all types of campus workers. The client requested that we turn training documents and materials used in synchronous lessons into an e-learning module. Specifically, the client wanted to address the knowledge and skill gaps in effective recruitment strategies.

Our team recommended a situated learning approach that would emphasize the context where members would use each recruitment strategy.  In addition to content development, we suggested developing a comprehensive scenario that would allow the members to engage with each step.

The eLearning module was developed using the successive approximation model (SAM) to receive iterative feedback from the client and all stakeholders. Our team used the ARCS model of motivation as a framework to design and develop training that could engage a diverse audience of campus workers.

Iterative Design

We provided the client with an initial prototype and scenario structure. The first prototype highlighted the navigation and functionality of choosing Storyline360 as a tool. We also did a preliminary review of the provided training documents and determined a module outline. These materials were only shared with the main contacts and not with all of the stake holders.

We incorporated the feedback that we received into the second prototype. We also included the content that we'd developed through client meetings and document review. We emphasized the principles of andragogy as we designed the course structure and navigation. Namely, we made sure that the content highlighted the relevance of recruitment to the organizations' success. Also, we set up navigation that prioritized self-directed learning. The second prototype was sent to key stakeholders within the chapter responsible for leading and training for review.

Iterative Development

I used Camtasia, Wellsaid Labs, and Articulate Storyline360 to develop â€‹the third prototype in the first phase of development. During the needs assessment, we identified that the members would benefit from having an authentic learning approach to the module. So I used images from prior UCW recruitment events and introduced chapter resources for the members to reference. Also, I used actual UCW issues as the basis for the interactive scenario. The characters were also developed with the UCW goals in mind.

The third prototype was presented to a larger audience of UCW members at a monthly meeting. The members were given the link to the eLearning and survey to collect data on their experience. I made edits to the eLearning based on the feedback that we received. Finally, our team made recommendations for future engagement with learning development to address the union's training concerns.
